Obesity Data and Tools
NCMP Local Authority Child Data Profile
Child obesity data from the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP)2006/07 to 2014/15 are now available in an online child obesity local authority data tool.
The tool provides local authority level child data (underweight, healthy weight, obese, excess weight – overweight including obese) for Reception (aged 4–5yrs) and Year 6 (aged 10–11yrs).
The tool also presents trend data and enables easy comparison of local authority data, allowing users to compare regional neighbours and local authorities with similar characteristics. Data quality indicators are also available in the tool, for example rate of participation in the NCMP.
The tool now includes inequalities data (sex, deprivation and ethnic group) by local authority. We would welcome user feedback on this new area of the tool to help improve it in the future.
Local Authority Adult Excess Weight Prevalence Data
New data are now available for prevalence of excess weight (overweight including obesity, BMI ≥25kg/m2) in adults (age 16 and over) at local authority level. These data are an indicator in the Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF) Health Improvement domain. PHE first published PHOF excess weight data in February 2014 using one year of data (2012). These new figures now combine three years of data (2012, 2013 and 2014).
We have also produced a breakdown of LA data by BMI category: underweight, healthy weight, overweight, obese and excess weight.
Data tables: Electoral Ward and MSOA NCMP child obesity prevalence
These spreadsheets contain NCMP obesity prevalence data for Reception (age 4-5 years) and Year 6 (age 10-11 years) children. The ward and MSOA prevalence estimates use the latest three years of NCMP data combined. The most recent data table (2011/12 – 2013/14) uses 2014 Electoral Ward and 2011 Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) of residence with LA, GOR and England data for comparison.
Latest publication: June 2015
Child Obesity and excess weight prevalence by Clinical Commissioning Group
NCMP obesity and excess weight (overweight including obese) prevalence data for Reception (aged 4-5 years) and Year 6 (aged 10-11 years) children by 2015 Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) of child’s residence. Prevalence data by CCG are supplied for each NCMP collection year from 2007/08 to 2013/14.
Guide to online tools for valuing physical activity, sport and obesity programmes
There are a number of online tools published that help the user to perform calculations to make the case for investment in the promotion of physical activity and/or the prevention of obesity. This guide summarises the available online tools and provides advice on which tool to use in which situation. The briefing will be useful to local authority practitioners wishing to make an assessment of health benefits in order to guide planning and investment decisions. This is likely to include health and social care professionals; sport and physical activity providers and planners; and transport professionals.
