Not on the team? Then no more sport for you

The decline of competitive sports in schools into an elite-only activity is a national scandal.
If I were to say “British sport”, what would you think of? Chances are you’d conjure up images of Sir Chris Hoy in tears on the podium, Jessica Ennis collecting gold, or Mo Farah’s flashbulb grin. Me, too – which is fair enough, because we’re only punters. But the trouble is that when policymakers in this country think of sport, they do the same.
They, too, look towards the exceptions rather than the rule; the dazzling world-class individuals crossing the finishing line, rather than the schoolkids getting to grips with gymnastics or the youth teams playing in the muddy drizzle for the sheer lung-bursting fun of it.
