Sport England’s campaign to encourage women to forget fear and embrace exercise is getting us talking, but why did we need it in the first place? And will it work?
‘I just didn’t think I was a fit person, and I felt like there was no way I was going to be able to do it,” says Julie Eastwood, 33.
“I had no idea what a spin class was. They don’t tell you that the wheels keep moving, even when you stop pedalling. I genuinely thought my heart might explode,” says Victoria Curwell, 29.
“I’ve been there, thinking, ‘I don’t want to go to the gym because I hate changing rooms and I don’t want to change in front of other people.’ I still have that problem. I go and hide in the loo,” says Clare Balding, TV presenter, 43.
