Women’s work: mothers, children and the global childcare crisis

Overseas Development Institute | March 4 2016

This report advises that the world is facing a hidden crisis in childcare which is leaving millions of children without the support they need, with damaging consequences for their future. It is also having severe impacts on three generations of women – on mothers, grandmothers and daughters. At its most severe this crisis of care means that, across the world, at least 35.5 million children under the age of five are being left alone, or with other young children, without adult supervision. That is more than all the under-fives living in Europe.
